Dimitsana |
|
Dimitsana is located 63 km northwest of Tripoli, at the southwestern slopes of Mainalo, at an altitude of 960 meters.
The residents call it "powder keg" because in the years of Turkish domination there were laboratories manufacturing gunpowder. The rush of visitors is too big every year and not by accident because it is a very impressive city with beautiful architecture and spectacular places.
Wandering in the narrow streets, you will travel in the history admiring the family home of Paleon Patron Germanos, the house where the Patriarch Gregory V was born, which is preserved and is operating as a church museum.
Of great importance are the churches that carry the history of many years as Agia Kyriaki, some of these are dating back to the 17th century.
The visit to the Lousios River Gorge will add another unique experience to your vacation. According to mythology, it was named so, because the nymphs bathed the new born Zeus in its waters. In ancient times, settlements were built around it, traces of which have remained indelible in time.
Walk to its banks, discover the nature and hear the water gushes from every point. It is really a place, where one can be isolated, away from the noise and hubbub, and where one can "clean" his mind, and also is indicated for hiking and swimming. If you decide to stay overnight in this area, you will have the best impressions.
In the western part of the canyon, on a sharp cliff, is the Philosopher's Monastery, founded in 963 and is dedicated to the Assumption. There, the Secret School was housed during the Ottoman period. At a distance of 4 km away is the Monastery of Our Lady of Aimialon, while at the opposite side lies the Monastery of St. John the Baptist.
Another area of particular interest is the Museum of Water Power. Learn how much power had the water in the pre-industrial period and how it facilitated the people. You will also see a fulling mill, where people washed their clothes, a mill where the grain was grinded, a tannery and a gun powder mill. It is worth visiting and is just 2 km from Dimitsana. |
