The region was known in ancient times by the name "Ipsous". According to mythology, ancient Ipsous was built by Ipsountas, one of the fifty sons of King Lycaon of Arcadia.

The current name Stemnitsa was acquired after the 7th century, after the colonization of the Slavs, in whose language means "wooded and shady place".
The settlement of the Slavs was followed by the settlement of Franks and later of the Turks.

The prosperity of Stemnitsa is determined at the Byzantine period, with its most famous the Stemnitsa bells product.

During the Ottoman rule, the monasteries, the Loussios Gorge and the whole area became the refuge of the inhabitants of the nearby villages.

In the Monastery of Baptist there is a door perforated by the bullets of the Turks, at the entrance of the Holy Monastery, where, after the raid in 1779 in Stemnitsa, the residents fled to it for their rescue.
