The picturesque Skoutari is another village of Mani and is ideal for a relaxing holiday.
It is the continuation of ancient Vordona that sank into the sea by a powerful earthquake, similar to this that caused the sinking of Atlantis.
The name Skoutari means shield in ancient Greek and was the base of the pirate Barbarossa or Red-Beard. In the years of Ottoman rule, Skoutari was the stronghold of the Greeks and none of the Turks could enter on this territory.
In a short distance from the village, at the beautiful bay of Skoutari, are located, at the left, the sandy beaches of "Kalamaki" and "Angira", in the center, the beach "Vordoni" and at the right the shingle beach of Agia Varvara.
If you are involved in scuba dive is worth diving under the area and enjoying the various ancient finds, such as columns, ancient walls, etc.
The village has the traditional classical architecture of Mani and has beautiful and clean beaches.
In the centre of the village stands the proud "Paliopyrgos", a tower that withstands the wear of time over many decades.
In the area there are many churches, some of which are dilapidated with murals and some others remain in good condition, as the Assumption of Mary, the temple of which was donated in 1688 by the Lymberakis Gerakaris who brought it from Constantinople.
Some churches that are worth visiting are the Church of Agios Ioannis the Riganas, the Church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) that is located in the village, the Holy Trinity Church and many others sights that will attract your interest.
Having as a base the Skoutari, you can visit many archaeological sites and picturesque sites in the region of Mani.
The unique cave of Diros, the picturesque Kotrona, the cosmopolitan Gythio, and the medieval kingdom of Mystras, the Monemvasia, and other unique locations. |
