Messinia was characterized
by Euripides as 'Kalikarpos' because of the beauty
and rich land. You can find everything here: a good
climate, mild winter, clement autumn, a lively spring,
a cool summer, mountains, plains, sea, sights, sports,
events, easy access and good tourist infrastructure.
This is why Messinia attracts visitors all year
round from all parts of the country, and many foreign
tourists who want to visit Greece and spend a quiet
yet interesting holiday. Messinia accomplish to
cover the needs of tourists of any age and caters
for any type of tourism: mountain, coastal, conventional
type of holidays of specialized forms.

Rich lands, sandy beaches, seaside villages, archeological
and historical monuments are some of the reasons
that Greek and foreign tourists visit Messinia.
Kalamata
is the capital of Messinia. It's a well layed out
modern city with remarkable economic, spiritual
and artistic activity.
You must visit the Castle and the old town, the
metropolitan church of Ipapandi, the Byzantine temple
of saint Apostle, the monastery, the public library,
the Modern Greek Art gallery, and the beautiful
renovated neoclassical houses. You will also enjoy
the way to Sparta through mount Taigetos.
In the summer you can enjoy the extended local beaches
and crystal clear waters. You can also visit various
exhibitions. If you decide to visit Kalamata on
Easter "Saitopolemos", a custom witch
started during Turkish domination will amaze you.

In a small distance
there are some seaside villages worth visit like Avia, Acrogiali and Kitries with great
waters for a swim but if you want to see more you
must visit the village of Saint Andreas with the
remains of Apollo's sanctuary.
Another small village with beautiful harbor-sanctuary
for small boats-is Trachila and not far from there
Catafigi is a remarkable cave with long stalactites.
Alagonia and Artemisia, mountainous villages
full of pines, sycamores and running waters, will
move you. |

Verga is a village consists of three small villages: Paralia,
Ano Verga and Kato Verga.
You can swim on the sandy beach of Paralia and Avia.
Gargaliani is an agrarian village in witch
people grow olive trees and grapes with view to
the lowland, the sea and the island Proti. There
are lots of beaches that you can swim such as Marathopoli,
Vromoneri, Agia Sotira, Mati, Chrysi Ammos, Lagouvardos
and Agia Kyriaki. |
Representative
offshore village of Mani is Kardamyli in
witch you can admire the Acropolis and the fort
complex of Mourtzini with the graves of Dioscuri.
In Kardamyli you can also visit the beautiful canyon
of Vyros river, Meropis Island, Proastio and Kampos
villages, Foneas region and Stavropygio village
with the traditional stone made houses.
At
the seafront, Koroni is a traditional amphitheatric
village in witch houses are painted with three different
colors: white, yellow and blue. It's worth visit
the fort, St. Johns women monastery, and Venetico
island with beautiful beaches apposite of foreland
Akritas.
Kyparissia is an offshore town built on foot
of mount Psichro. Visit the ancient town with the
remains of the ancient port, the booth of Hunters
club and Aetos village with lots of running waters,
trees and flowers.
From Mavromatis village visitors can go to mount
Ithomi in witch still remains the old surrounding
walls witch made to protect the mountain. Going
through Meligalas valley you can see prehistoric
Dorio.
Methoni is a beautiful offshore town with a castle. On the
south don't forget to visit Bourtzi and Oinouses
a complex of small islands Sapieza, Agia Mariani
and Shiza. Sapieza is an important biotope great
for excursion. Shiza Island has a beautiful cave.
In the middle of Messinia valley is Meligalas village a commercial and agrarian center. You must
visit the bridge of Mavrozoumenas.
Locals
call it 'The Island" but it's a central agrarian
town of Messini. Nearest beaches are Agios
Nikolaos, Bouka, Analipsi, Agios Avgoustinos and
Velikas.
One of the most important touristic centers of Messinia
is Petalidi Village in witch you can enjoy
your vacations and swim on beautiful beaches around
settlement and in Kalamaki.
Pylos (Navarino) is a beautiful seaside small
town in witch you can see the monument of Agion
Pesonton in Helonaki dedicated to the homonymous
sea fight. Other things that worth visit are the
Old Castle, Nestoras Cave, Niocastro, Gialovas lagoon
and the area of Voidokilia.
Stoupa another seaside small town with sandy beaches and
small villages like Lefktro and Kastania has the
old mine of Pestova.
Filiatra a city with big houses with gardens and
back yards guests a model of the Eiffel tower made
by H. Fournarakis.
Finikounda use to be a small fish town but
through the years evolve to a major tourist resort
not only for the great waters but also for the two
small islands across Shiza and Agia Mariani. Finikounta
still holds to the old style of houses with tiles
build amphitheatric of the homonymous lowland facing
Nestoras Mycenaean palace.
When you visit Messinia don't forget to bye local
products like olive oil, wine, figs, pastel, raisins,
ouzo, raki, mastic, lalagia, sausages stuffed with
orange and silk napery from Kalogreon Monastery. |
