Monemvasia

Monemvasia is a beautiful castle east of the Peloponnese. Its shores are washed by the waters of the Myrtoo Sea and its port was famous during the occupation by the Venetians. It is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land and it is said that from there it got its name, namely from the words "only (moni)" and "entrance (Emvasis)".
It consists of two cities, the Upper City, the Castle, built on a plateau on top of the cliff, keeping intact its medieval character, where the main monument that is preserved is the Temple of Agia Sophia and the Lower Town, the Gefira. Outside the castle, in recent years, the new settlement shows rapid growth, which is a usual tourist destination.

The visitors will have the unique opportunity to admire the Venetian influences in its architecture, the castles that are standing proudly, the renaissance houses and the churches, especially the Agia Sophia which is a miniature of the famous church in Istanbul where the travellers will be magnetized by the harmony and the views.

In the central alley of Monemvasia, the visitors will have the opportunity to do their shopping at stores which are built with taste and for those who want to make a break for coffee or lunch, they can choose through a variety of options.

The touring through the streets of the city first will seem to you as a labyrinthine, since it was built in an era where piracy had flourished in order residents to have time to organize the defence mechanism.

The architecture of the buildings with arches will surely delight you and is worth visiting some of the 40 churches that dominate the city.

For those who choose to visit the Gibraltar of Greece for their summer holidays or for the beach lovers, regardless of era, there are beaches for every taste that will surely amaze you and for the more adventurous there are facilities for water sports.

Lovers of poetry, specifically of the person that was proposed for Nobel, Giannis Ritsos will have the opportunity to see from close his home and then they can visit the archaeological museum, which, like almost everything, is not far away.

The new town has lively nightlife and in contrast to the Lower Town, cars and motorbikes are allowed. There are hostels and hotels for those who choose to spend the night there.

For your stay, both inside and outside the castle, there are all types of hotels, modern and old houses that retain the architectural style and the character, and hostels for those who prefer an alternative type of accommodation.
The hungry will not remain disappointed. You will find excellent restaurants serving cooked food, and fish restaurants that are serving fresh fishes caught straight from the Cretan Sea and all these, usually, in affordable prices.

For those who are seeking nightlife, they will find it mostly in the new settlement and whatever your tastes are you will be satisfied because you can find shops that have from rock to classical culture.

For your shopping, Monemvasia has a multitude of local products, like fine wines and traditional sweet and shops with handmade goods that will always remind you of your visit to the castle.

Monemvasia, characterized as a place of great natural beauty, promises to enchant you with the multiple attractions.

The distance of Monemvasia from Athens is 305 km and 95 km from Sparta. It is advisable to visit this place in periods without much traffic in order to enjoy it and enjoy what Monemvasia can offers you. Wherever you go, you will make the best choice. Do not put this trip off.
