Beaches of Elaphonisos
On the island, the major attractions are the beautiful beaches, with the stunning sandy beach of Simos as a trademark.
It is a long beach, located south of the island and has magnificent views over the island of Kythira. The golden sand is fine like sugar and the clear waters captivate visitors with the coral colours. Feature of the beach is the continuous line of sandy dunes that reach up to 10 meters.
The Panagia beach is at the western part of the island. It is an equally beautiful beach, strewn with sand and the sea bottom features a feast of colours with rich flora and for this reason is recommended for endless underwater explorations. The area has lush vegetation with cedars, which literally pop up through the sand, and rare flowers.
Some other beaches you can find on the island are Kontogoni, Kalogeras, Lefki, Aglyftis and others.
There are organized tours on the island by small boats for unforgettable excursions to the beaches and for a thorough acquaintance with this beautiful place.
In Elafonisos, due to its fishing fleet, you will find plenty of fresh fish and seafood in great variety and you can taste them at the quaint taverns, very close to the sea.
A very interesting information is that Elafonissos was not always an island but it was joined to the mainland via a thin point. The separation from the mainland was done after an earthquake which dated around the 6th century.
