Makrinitsa, Folk Art and History Museum of Pelion

The Folk Art and History Museum of Pelion is housed in Topali Mansion, built in 1844 in accordance with the date that is engraved on the stone reliefs above the entrance.
This is a three-storey mansion, a representative sample of the classical architecture, as this it is formed at the end of the first half of the last century.It is stoned for the most part except from the southern part of the roof, which is constructed of mud.
It has a quadruple wooden roof with slate plates of the region, which extends around so thus to protect the sensitive mud walls.
It has a strongly fortified nature with its many embrasures and the defence tower on the roof, its shielded entrance with the heavy protective bars, the secret caches and the few small barred windows of the lower floor that are multiplied out at the above floors.
This mansion, which family Topali donated to the Community of Makrinitsa in 1932, houses the Museum of Folk Art and History of Pelion. The first repair was made in 1957 and attempts were made to function in the 60s decade.
In 1985, it was characterized by the Ministry of Culture as a historic monument. It was followed the drafting of the study of its repair and its restoration in 1994, by the 5th organization of historical monuments.

  he folklore collection includes a number of exhibits which are currently more than 1500 items from the initially 311, including a series of paintings of folk art from 18th and 19th century from the region of Pelion, a rich collection of old photographs of the beginning of our century, copper, wooden and ceramic household utensils, the equipment for the distilling of raki, pictures, engravings and small items of ecclesiastical art, traditional costumes of Pelion, historical relics of Makrinitsa as the banner of the Revolution of 1878, the equipment for the art of weaving, wool weaving and "rugs".
In 1998, it was included to the collection a series of pictures of folk painting by the seascaper N. Christopoulos from Volos, a supply by EOT to the museum.
The main goal of the exhibition was and it is the folklore mansion not to miss its warm character of a house, while with a modern museum idea to set out the collections in a way to expose and to show the popular culture of the region.

Painting of Theophilos
The famous folk painter Theophilos Hatzimichail from Mytilene was working for several years in Volos and Pelion. A sample of its painting art is in the small, namesake cafe, on the western edge of the central square. This is a mural of 1910, measuring 3.15Χ2.50m, depicting Katsandonis and his lads, as they enjoy themselves over the mountains. Also, in the church of Virgin Mary, there is a painting of the Resurrection of Christ by Theophilos on 1911.
