Tourist Guide of Lasithi

Gorges, beaches, historic monuments and Venetian fortresses set the scene in Lasithi.

Agios Nikolaos is the capital of Lasithi District, a port with a cosmopolitan character and a thriving tourist center. You can visit the Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos, the nature reserve Almiro, the island Agioi Pantes and the Public Library Koundourio.

Agia Fotia and Ferma are beautiful seaside villages in a pine-filled area while Vai is an idyllic site with palm trees. Vai has the only palm forest in Europe. Near the monastery of Agios Giannis Kapsas is the ravine Kapsa near the seaside community of Goudoura.

Elouda is a cosmopolitan tourist resort with luxurious hotels. There you can visit the ruins of ancient Olous, the old salt mines, the stone windmills, the church of Timios Stavros with its majestic view, the Peninsula Spinalogka, mountain villages with stone houses, windmills, churches and monasteries.

One of the most graphic villages in the district is Kato Zakros, where you must see the Minoan Palace and Tombs, the Ravine of the Dead, the fountains with running water, surrounded by plane trees and the Pelekita Cave.

Ierapetra is the largest city in the district and has experienced heightened economic prosperity recently along with a fair amount of tourism. You can swim at the town beach, Nea Anatoli, at Ammoudares, at the beaches east of Ierapetra until Makrigialo, and the island Nisi. The villages of Kavousi, Kalamavka, Kalo Chorio, Kritsa, Males, Milatos are graphic villages, ideal for peaceful vacationing.

The villages of Koutsounari, Koutsouras, Makrigialos, Mirtos, Xerokampos, Palaikastro, Pachia Ammos are seaside villages while the Lasithi Plateau (Tzermidao) is a traditional plain on the Northern western edge of the formidable Dikta Mountains where excellent quality agricultural products are cultivated. The Lasithi Plateau has many sites among which are the caves, windmills, ravines, and ruins of ancient sites worth exploring.

Sitia is an important port that has maintained its island character untouched, despite its tourist development. Aiolian parks, archaeological sites, wineries, monasteries and small churches offer much to the summer visitor.

The charming harbor of Sisi offers many types of accommodations. The nearby islands Avgo, Agioi Pantes, Agios Nikolaos, Grandes, Dionusiades, Elasa, Koufonisi, Spinalogka, Chrisi and Psira are islands where summer trips are a must.

If you visit the district of Lasthi buy folk art, icons, textiles and try the wines, Raki(traditional distilled liquor), Sweets, Paximadia, (barley rusks), Gida Vrasti (boiled goat) and Maindanosalata (parsley salad).
