Ierapetra is located on the southeastern coast of 
Crete, in the prefecture of 
Lasithi, and is the southernmost city not only of Greece but of whole Europe.
                      
                Ierapetra is the fourth largest city of Crete and there is the main commercial center of the Prefecture for the exportations of agricultural products to Europe. 
                Its distance from the region of 
Agios Nikolaos is 36 km, from 
Heraklion is 100 km and 242 km from 
Chania. 
                East of Ierapetra and 25 km away is the summer tourist destination, Makris Yialos.
                
                In the area is clear the presence of a rich ecosystem. Some of the most important are the Golden Island, the largest and most important forest of Crete: the forest of Selakano and the mountains of Thripti.
                
                Apart from the natural wealth, emphasis is given on the cultural development of the region. In 2003, it was created the Department of Marketing and Advertising of School of Business of Economics of TEI, which was the first department of higher education in the town of Ierapetra.
