Zakros is located in southeastern
Crete, and is approximately three hours from
Heraklion and one hour from
Sitia.
It belongs to one of the smaller municipalities of the prefecture of
Lassithi and the inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and especially in the production of oil. It is no coincidence that Zakros is one of the cities of Crete that produces olive oil, fruits and vegetables of high quality.
Historical Value
From historical perspective, the importance of this place is worth of admiration and respect. From excavations that were carried out during the 20th century, many discoveries came to light, suggesting that was a densely populated region with a developed road network and a palace, which is as significant as the palace of Malia, of Phaistos and of Knossos.
Furthermore, besides the above, tombs were discovered and it was given to them the name "Gorge of the Dead". It is important to note that the findings of Zakros are in the Archaeological Museum of Iraklion, of Sitia and of
Agios Nikolaos.
Thanks to the excavations and to all those objects that came to light, any reconstruction of the perimeter of the site is prohibited. As a result, there is not influx of mass tourism there, except from the abbey Toplou that is located just north of Zakros.
