Pilgrimage in Lesvos
Lesvos is adorned by churches, monasteries and shrines, each with its own story. Their fame has spread far and people from all countries of the world have come on pilgrimage to the island.
The most famous shrines of the island are:
Panagia of Agiasos, one of the most important pilgrimages in Greece. The image of Mary holding Christ was created by St. Luke with mastic and wax and moved from Jerusalem to Agiasos by Agathon monk of Ephesus in 803 AD. Numerous pilgrims swarm on 15th August to worship the miraculous icon.
Holy Monastery of Saint Raphael, who, after some repeated appearances in the dreams of a believer, broke the story of his martyrdom and thus the secret history of the monastery of Karyonas has been "revealed", which is located amongst the groves of Thermi. His bones were found at the place he had indicated, as also the bones of priest Nicholas and little Irene, who both had suffered along with him by the Turks in 1463.
Today, the monastery that was reconstructed in memory of the Holy Martyrs Raphael, Nicholas and Irene, is developed into a major monastic community.
It is located on the hill in Karyes of Thermi and is nunnery.

Monastery of Archangel Mantamados.
The Archangel is the protector of the island, but the fame of his miracles is spread all over the world, gathering faithful crowds. The form of the Archangel Michael on the bas-relief image is shown shaded, but his love for the whole world is rife throughout the church, filling the hearts of the faithful with divine joy. The tradition has preserved the history of the monastery, which was plundered by Saracen pirates in the late first millennium.
All the monks were slaughtered, except the novice monk Gavril, who survived thanks to a miracle of Archangel. Gavril picked up the blood of his slaughtered comrades, he mingled it with clay and he carved on it the form of the Head of the Order of Angels.
Monastery of Limonos
It is located north of Kalloni and has a great library of manuscripts and houses rare historical and religious artifacts.

Anyone traveling to the island should also visit the monasteries of Panagia Mirsiniotisa, Perivoli, Pithari, Damandri located in the areas of Kalloni, Antissa, Eressos and Polichnitos, respectively.
Monastery of John the Divine of Ipsilos of Antissa
On Ordimnos mount, is located the historical monastery of St. John the Divine.
Its fortress architecture, with turrets and fortified tower, creates the impression of a monastery, which, over the centuries, forced to put up defense in many cases and during raids it offered shelter to residents of the surrounding area.
It celebrates on 8 May. There are many relics and manuscripts.

Church of St. Therapist in Mytilini
Impressive exterior and splendid interior, the church of St. Therapist is one of the most recognizable monuments of the island, although its history, by its present form at least, is just over half a century old, while was inaugurated in 1935. It is the largest temple in Mytilini with a beautiful temple and Saints Icons.
Finally, it is worth visiting the magnificent churches of St. Athanasius and the Metropolis of Mytilini, which are small miracles of architecture. |
