Tourist Guide of Lesvos |
|
The Petrified Forest, vast olive groves and thick
pine forests, along with the expansive beaches and
the characteristic fan-shape of the island itself
are what make Lesvos unique. The island's capital
town, Mytilini, is distinguished by its Bavarian,
Provencal and neo-classical townhouses, lining the
narrow streets.
The Castle, the Ancient Theatre, the Geni Tzami,
the Lesvian House and a series of pyrgoi or fortified
tower dwellings such as Salta and Xatzi Savva,
not to mention the art and archaeological museums
are only a few of the places which are well worth
a visit.
Aghia Paraskevi in the centre of the island is
a small town with a distinctive air. The olive
mill and Kremasti Bridge are some of its most
charming attractions.
Agiasos in Eastern Lesvos is perhaps the most beautiful
hill town of the island. Hidden below Mount Olympus
in a thickly forested ravine, it is widely regarded
for its pottery and wood carving that in the previous
century created a school of woodcarving art. If
you have the chance to visit it, don't forget to
see the Petrified Forest at Zigos. |
Antissa is a large inland town
with its port at Gavvatha, one of the most striking
beaches on the island. Antissa's beautiful central
square shaded by giant plane trees makes for pleasant
coffee stop.
Eresos features several interesting architectural
elements. This town is linked with Skala Eresou
by a wonderful row of trees. Skala Eresou is one
of the largest resorts on the island.
The collection of Natural History in Vrisa is well-worth
visiting. Vrisa is a large inland village situated
near the Cape of Aghios Fokas, with its port at
Vatera.
The three settlements of Pyrgoi, Loutropoli and
Thermi will certainly make an impression on you.
The beach of Thermis features hot mineral springs.
The Medieval "xavouzes'' shouldn't be missed
where you will discover the remains of a temple
to Thermias Artemidas.
Kalloni, known mainly for the sardines caught off
the coast of nearby Skala
Kallonis and its endless sandy beaches, offers many
archaeological finds from the remains of the ancient
city-states of Pyrra and Arisvi, discovered in the
Bay of Kalloni and near the town
Mithymna(or Molyvos) with its Byzantine castle overlooking
the town, is the most popular and picturesque town
on the island, featuring colourfully restored 18th
century houses lining cobblestone lanes, dozens
of street fountains and a charming harbour. Its
mineral springs are also worth a trip.
Pappados with its port at Perama, Petra with its
109-step climb up to the 18th century church of
Panagia Glykofilousa, Plomari producing its world-renowned
ouzo at five distilleries and Polixvitos are all
villages and towns with much to offer the visitor.
Sigri built on an impressive volcanic site offers
a great deal to the visitor in search of an idyllic
vacation spot for self-reflection. |
