Monodentri. Agia Paraskevi Church. Thesi Oxia |
|
  One of the most traditional and most famous villages of the prefecture of Ioannina is Monodentri.
In just 18 km from the city of Ioannina, it is ideal for a day trip if you stay in Ioannina.
It is the homeland of the benefactors Rizari brothers.
You will see large mansions and churches that testify to the economic prosperity of the inhabitants mainly during the period of Turkish rule.
 In the central part of the village is the church of St. Athanasius, which is dated in the early 19th century.
Very near to the center of the village is the cross-shaped-roofed church of St. Menas, which was built in the early of 17th century.
The frescoes of the church were made in two phases. Those of the nave dating back to 1619-20 and those of the narthex that dates back to 1734.
  The wooden carved and gilded temple of the church dates in 1785.
At the settlement operate, and are open all year round, many traditional accommodation and catering shops with fabulous traditional dishes.
Try the traditional sweets that you will find in almost all shops.
Enjoy your coffee or your sweet by the great view the area offers.
Near the village and from the locations of Oxia and the monastery of Agia Paraskevi, spectacular views to the canyon gorge are offered. Especially the view from the observation point in Oxia (a small balcony - plateau), with the great depth of the ravine and Vikos river to flow to its lowest point, it causes your awe.
At the end of the road, follow the direction the small sign shows you, and after five minutes trip, on a path with beautiful views, you will be able to reach Oxia place, to enjoy the spectacular views of the gorge.
On the way by car to Oxia, you will pass the stone forest, which is a natural monument (rocky formations with superimposed horizontal layers of stone). |
Vikos Gorge - Guiness Record
 Vikos gorge lies at the heart of the region, is 10 km long and has vertical, steep and rocky slopes of several hundred meters.  The canyon extends from Monodentri and Koukouli villages to Vikos village. At the bottom there is a stream, which, in the exit of the gorge, becomes Voidomatis River.
The region has a rare beauty and ecological value as an ecosystem.
Its geographical isolation, the minimum until now human intervention, the great variety of vegetation and the microclimatic conditions are favoring the development of many different plant species and the existence of rare species of fauna of our country.
In Vikos-Aoos area 1700 species and subspecies of plants have been recorded and 182 species of vertebrates, including several rare as the bear, the wolf, the chamois, golden eagle, the vulture and others.
  On the route from Monodentri village, to one of the best observation points of the gorge, the monastery of Agia Paraskevi, near the good-paved stone path you follow and close to the village, there is a sign referred to the Guiness 1997 record of Vikos gorge as the deepest canyon in the world, at Pindos Mount of NW Greece with a depth of 900 meters (2950 f.) and an opening of only 1100 meters (3600 f.). |
Monodentri - Agia Paraskevi Church
 When you are in the prefecture of Ioannina, do not forget to visit the monastery of Agia Paraskevi in Monodentri (5 minutes on foot from the village).
 You will see the monastery, built on the edge of the rocks on the rim of the canyon. At a point, there is a balcony room and the base of the column that supports it, is on the rocks at the edge of the cliff.
You will admire the beautiful frescoes (the wall paintings of the church are dating back to 15th century.) and you will be impressed by the unparalleled view from the point of the monastery.
