The hill has housed a settlement where the village is now since 1000 AD, according to written sources of 1205.
It flourished during the Byzantine times and continued its dynamic evolution in the subsequent years as it was conquered and settled by the Venetians and Franks. It has been referred to as a robust settlement during the Turkish occupation, whereas in the years of the Greek war of Independence of 1821, it made a name for itself as a hideout of the freedom fighters, just as the entire region of Andritsaina had done.
Legend has it that the village was first built on a hill dense and wild vegetation. Plane trees creating deep shade, age-old oak trees, towering chestnut trees and wild holly oaks covered the forested hill. Its name still remains a mystery, as none of the explanations has gained ground over the others.
Some say that it was the surname of the first settler, George Koufopoulos.
Others maintain that the first settlers of the area stood in awe before a giant hollow of an oak tree, while others say that the trees were so huge preventing plantation from growing under them, thus creating a «hollow» or empty place. It's a classic farming and stockbreeding village and besides Mother Nature's original products it also offers an incredible view, as if it were a natural watchtower.
From Koufopoulo you can scan the fortress of Oria, hillsides with the buzzing beehives, high ridges and the tops of surrounding mountains.
