Ano Asites

Ano Asites in Heraklion of Crete
The Ano Asites is a small village at an altitude of 490 m on the eastern slopes of Psiloritis Mountain and it is just 24 km from Heraklion.
Very close, just 1 km away, lies the "other half" of the settlement, the Kato Asites.

The natural environment is diverse with high and steep mountain peaks, plateaus, canyons, springs, streams, low gullies, ravines and meadows.

The residents are mainly engaged in agriculture (olives, grapes) and less in farming and tourism.

You can visit:
  • The two-aisled church of St. George of Gorgolaini, which was completed in 1627, and it is located just outside the Kato Asites.
  • The Nychteridospilio in Ano Asites, with a depth of 100 meters, is one of the 4 important Psiloritis caves for the bats. It is a refuge for the species of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum throughout the year and in early summer, hundreds of bats are gathered here to give birth.
  • The grand canyon of Agios Charalambos, which is crossed by the E4 European Mountaineering path.
  • The Monastery of Chrysopigi which is built on a wooded ravine, surrounded by ancient hydrophytes trees, whose existence is due to a source that is located in the courtyard. Next to the church there are the remains of a winepress and a mill.
  • The half-ruined church of Agios Anthony in the gorge, in order to admire the "weird" marble sculptures on the windows.

The Canyon of Agios Charalambos

  • The mountain shelter of Prinos in the eastern foothills of Psiloritis, at an altitude of 1,100 meters.
  • The cemetery of the ancient Rizinia, located two kilometers from Ano Asites.
The excavations in the area started in 1969 by the Italian School of Archaeology when an extensive necropolis was revealed, which was in continuous use since the end of the Minoan period until the 6th AD century.
680 tombs have been excavated and the most important findings (tombstones, vases, urns, etc.) are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. At the edge of the cemetery, beside the road, there are, in a very good condition, two domed buildings of the Roman era. Tradition says that they were tombs of kings and that nearby the area there's a third, full of gold, which has not been found yet...
  • The famous traditional "cauldrons" to watch or even participate in the production of raki or wine.
Every October - November, the distillation of the famous Cretan spirit drink (raki) occurs, and each September the production of wine.
These traditional processes are always accompanied by endless nights of dance and drinks with the accompaniment of music and excellent local dishes, around the cauldron, waiting for the first distillation.
