In the northern part of the island of Crete in Heraklion, and only 20 km from
the capital city of the same name, is
Agia Pelagia.
It is considered as a distinguished tourist resort on the island and it is a hub for anyone wishing to visit the sightseeing of the island.
The village of Agia Pelagia is a seaside one and the houses are built around the coast in an amphitheattical style. On west, it is surrounded by the Gulf of Lygaria and on the east, of the Bay of Mononaftis. It must be noted that the views are amazing.
The sea and the Agia Pelagia
Agia Pelagia is an attractive place known for its beaches. As it is "protected" by the bay, the sea remains calm and clear even if it is blowing in the Cretan Sea. Apart from the amazing sea, the golden beaches play an important role in the attraction of the tourists.
Beyond this, Agia Pelagia is a magnet for lovers of water activities such as jet - skiing, sailing and canoeing or they can rent paddle boats. It is useful to note that the water is deep with great clarity.
You are invited to enjoy a beautiful walk along the beach. During this route, you will encounter restaurants, cafes and bars, so you have the opportunity to enjoy what you want with the company of the sea.
If someone wants less crowded beaches, he can visit the west side of Agia Pelagia, where the beaches of Kladissos, Psaromoura, Mononaftis are.
In the region there is a large hotel development with the construction of several shelters, and conference centers, restaurants and nightclubs are emerging, offering breathtaking views.
There are colorful buildings everywhere with markings of many kinds. Away from the beach, in a much quieter place, is the church of Agia Pelagia, from which the area got its name. It is built in the 13th century and the Agia Pelagia's icon is considered miraculous.
You can easily find it following the signs and if you decide to visit it on October 8 - the day of celebration - you just follow the crowds that go to pray.
Excursions from Agia Pelagia
Starting from Agia Pelagia and by using public transportation, you can visit many interesting places:
- The archaeological site of Knossos, located 25 km on east,
- the Fodele, where the Museum of El Greco it is found, in 10 km west,
- the cave of Gerontospilios in Melidoni with its particular history and the astonishing geological wealth, which is noticed on it.
