|
With significant maritime and cultural tradition the island of Spetses is cosmopolitan and offers high standards tourism.
It is the home town of important personalities of the Greek revolution and public life.
Spetses and Dapia
with the courtyards, its narrow streets, the squares, the scenic churches, strong tourism and good artistic activity impresses all kind of visitors.
On the island cars are prohibited and only carriages are allowed to carry the visitors in most parts of the island.
It is worth to visit the mansions of Hatzigianni Meksi, Bouboulina, Sotiri Anargirou, the Town Hall, the square of Poseidon, the Anargirios - Koralenios School, the church of Panagia Armata, the cave of Bekiri. Besides the museum of Spetses there is the Mpoumpoulina museum.
You can visit the beaches of Aghia Marina, Aghios Nikolaos, Aghios Mamas, Kounoupitsa and Scholes. Likewise, the beaches Kouzounos, Ksilokeriza, Aghioi Anargiroi, Aghia Paraskevi, Zogeria, Ligoneri, Vrellos and Bithistamna.
In the second week of September there is the commemoration of the naval battle of Spetses "Armata".
In Spetses you can buy the famous almonds and decorative pottery. Try some almonds, traditional sweets and the plate "Fish ala spetsiota".

Spetses is a small island accross the southest point of Argolida, in the entrance of the Argolikos Bay. Spetses has beach all around the island with clear waters and pines. On the northeast side of the island there is the traditional settlement which still retains the splendor of the
glorious maritime past in the old mansions of the revolution.
Single horse carriages are offered for romantic rides costwise, while the use of cars is prohibited on the island.
Spetses, blessed by its geografical position, the natural landscape and cultural
tradition, has evolved in a popular touristic destination for visitors with high standards. Spetses is appropriate short-term or long-term vacation, all year long. Access to the island is possible by ship (from Piraeus) or by car up to the beach of Kosta in Argolida and the by ship. |

The oldest findings that approve that the island was livable take us back in the Early Period (3rd millennium BC). The island is indicated by Pafsania with the name "Pitioussa" which means that it has a lot of pines. According to the most known etymology it's current name comes from the venetian phrase "Isola di Spezzie" (=the island of herbs) while much later comes with the name Petsa or Petses.
The port and the square of Dapia:
It used to be an emplacement of the island. (there are cannons until today) and area of gathering of the lords and captain during the Revolution.
Bouboulina museum:
It is housed in the mansion of the heroine which is a double-floored residence, built at the end of the 17th century. It has an amazing ceiling and a large hall.During the tour the visitor listens about the life and actions of Bouboulina, while seeing her personal objects and portraits, a dummy of the legendary ship of Agamemnon, images, paintings, books of the legendary image of the ship, the Agamemnon, pictures, books, maps, tables, furniture and other objects from the 17th to the 20th century.

ARMATA
The many visitors, Greeks and foreigners, come to Spetses every September to attend the celebrations brilliant chariots, organized in memory of the naval battle of Spetses (8 September 1822).
The program of the events includes exhibitions of paintings, music, and dance (concerts, dance groups and traditional music, etc.) plays and reaches the peak of the representation of the naval battle with fireworks. |

Events
In August in the areas of Anargirio and Korgialenio School theatrical plays, speeches etc. are organized.
In the island there are art rooms that mostly
in spring and summer host art exhibitions.
The visitor has also the opportunity to participate in many traditional celebrations and festivals that retain their authentic
