Tourist Guide of Lefkada |
|
It is an island very close to mainland Greece with a distinct charm. Its trademark is the impressive beaches with the white sand and the azure waters.
It has modern hotels units and enterprises of lodgings for each requirement, a lot of choices of amusement and dining. The overall picture, regarding the tourist infrastructure, is high.

It is the fourth largest island in the Ionian Sea and nestled between Kefalonia and Corfu, opposite Εtoloakarnania, which is separated with a narrow strip of sea, that was the Corinthians the first who deepen it in the mid-7th century BC.
It took its name from the cape Lefkapa which is at its southern end, which in antiquity was called the Lefkas or Lefka Akra.

The town of Lefkada

If you follow the road south of the town, you will pass successively from the Ligia which is an important fishing center, from Nikiana with the several accommodation facilities which is a famous place for holidays, from the seaside village Perigiali and you will end up in the renowned and famous Nidri, one of the more tourist spots of Lefkada. The beautiful sea, the beautiful view, the Prigiponisia (Scorpios, Skorpidi, Madouri, Sparta, etc.) complete the magnificent scenery of the area.
In this region, according to the German archaeologist Nterpfelt, was the Homeric Ithaca. There are ruins of the prehistoric city, the aqueduct and the Early Helladic circular tombs.
The Scorpios is the beautiful private island of
Aristotelis Onassis and at the green island of Madouri you can see the mansion that was built by the poet
Aristotelis Valaoritis.
The nearby gorge Dimosari with the running water,

Continuing to the south, you will meet Vlycho,
which is sheltered in a bay and it is opposite the
picturesque Geni.
Next, you will find Poros, a green and
tranquil village, perched on a cliff,
where there is a medieval tower and
the beautiful beach of Mikros Gialos with the shiny pebbles.
Next stop is Sivota, a picturesque village
nestled deep in a lush and beautiful fjord. |

In the southern part of Lefkada is the Vasilici, a beautiful
village with great tourist development and a fine beach in an
enclosed bay, a perfect place for the lovers of windsurfing.
From Vasilici,
you can visit by boat the Cape
of Lefkata or the Cape of Nira with the sharp
white rocks that are awesome. In antiquity, in
this region of Lefkata, was worshiped the Lefkatas Apollo.
Important sacred relics are preserved. In the place of
the ancient temple is the church of Saint Nikolas
17th century). It is said that the ancient poet Sappho,
desperate from her unfortunate love for Faonas, killed
herself by falling from the sharp rocks. |
Within walking distance ftom Vasilici is the impressive Porto Katsiki, one of the most beautiful beaches,
not only in this island but also worldwide, with the crystal clear sea
in green shades. A little northern, you will find another
famous and beautiful beach, the Egremni.
Continuing at the west coast, there is the picturesque fishing
village of Agios Nikitas, that is located between the well-known
and beautiful beaches of Pefkoulia and Kathisma. It is a traditional
village, designated as preserved, where you can enjoy the magnificent
sunset. It has been recently developed into a cosmopolitan resort with
several accommodation units, shops, dining and entertainment.
If you move towards to inland, you will find many beautiful mountainous villages, that each one will impress you with its authenticity, the beautiful landscape, the maintenance of its traditional configurations and the lush natural environment. |

The Athani, at a distance of 40 kilometers from the town of Lefkada, is a mountainous
village on the southern tip of the island which is famous for its aromatic honey.
The Agios Petros, near Vasiliki, is a typical village of Lefkada. |
Karia, in the center of the island,
is a mountainous village with abundant water and a lush vegetation.
Karia has remarkable local customs and a long tradition of embroidery
("Karsanika" embroidery),
which constitutes, until today, an important
artistic activity of women of Karia, because the embroidery are not
only a work of art, but also enhances the family's income.
In Karia you should visit the Folk Museum "Maria Koutsochero",
with the many exhibits of the previous year life of the country.
It is
an important attempt to keep alive the tradition by exhibiting hand-woven
materials, looms, tools and the famous "karsanika" embroidery.
Also you must see the traditional winery of Lampikos where the
raki is made from grapes.

You can also visit the village Vafkeri or Eglubi,
which is on small hills at an altitude of 730 meters, and it is the
most mountainous village on the island, famous for its delicious lentils.
You can also visit the village Drymonas - Exanthia (Municipality of Sfakiotes)
with the most beautiful houses smothered in olives trees, almond trees and
vines, the village Sivros with the forest of laurel, the Marantochori with the nearby beaches Afteli and Ammousa etc. |
