Kato, Messaia, Ano Trikala |
|
Trikala of Korinthia is consisted of three villages, Kato, Messaia and Ano, which is the largest village with an altitude of about 1100 m. The distance from Xylokastro is 24 km and the road that leads to it is very picturesque.
Trikala was created in the 10th century in place of the ancient Miseo and was the homeland of Notarai, which were powerful elders who settled there in the 16th century. At the time of Ottoman rule was also called "archontomachalas" (neighbor of lords) because of the elegant and majestic architecture, with its tall towers, the heavy steel doors and the mansions buildings that unfortunately only a few of them have survived today.
Patron saint of the village is Agios Nikolaos, whose church was renovated by the Notarai in 1805. The architectural features coincide perfectly with the tradition of the site. It is vaulted with a tiled roof and a tall dome and the interior has several frescoes and icons.
Coming from Ano Trikala you will have the opportunity to visit the monastery of Agios Vlassios. It dates from around 1400 and in walking distance it was found his miraculous image.
You can stop to rest in the church yard and to be impressed by the magnificent views of Korinthia.
Ano Trikala is known for its excellent tourist infrastructure, is appropriate for winter holidays and for that reason it has so many tourists every year.
You can find all sorts of accommodation for your stay, from simple and elegant traditional rooms to traditional houses and mansions. As for the restaurants and taverns, they have a reputation for their superb cuisine and the fresh ingredients they use.
Because of the altitude, the village offers wonderful views, lush vegetation with different type of trees, poplars, cedars and firs, evergreen trees such as mulberry and many more. It produces raisins, nuts, cereals, apples while previously had been especially developed the logging, farming and processing of leather. |

Middle Trikala is a traditional village with beautiful buildings, many of them are very old and others are well preserved made by stone and wood. There is a large tourist development in the area and you can see the quaint old small houses converted into elegant restored houses without altering or eliminating of their traditional character.
You will find traditional cafes, but also most modern and elegant cafes for coffee or a drink and you will enjoy your meal in one of the taverns of the village, always with local recipes.
Visit the Monastery of Virgin Mary, which is located in a very nice place in the village, built around 1700 by the Bishop Gregory of Korinthos.
Kato Trikala is located at an altitude of 900m. and is equally picturesque and beautiful. The central square will amaze you once it is considered one of the most picturesque squares in Greece, is stone build with two age-long plane trees, that reminiscent of the classic squares we read in stories. The square is surrounded by nice restaurants and cafes.
For your stay you will find several rooms and houses of the familiar traditional style and you will feel comfortable with the outstanding hospitality of its inhabitants.
During your tour in the village, visit the impressive church of St. Dimitrios, an old but preserved building of 1697.
Although the fact that Kato Trikala is at a lower altitude, the place is not lagging behind either in overlooking either in beautiful landscapes.
Whichever destination you choose, you will be impressed, but if you finally visit all these three destinations, you wont be able to choose which of them you love more.
