The Fioro tou Levande, the flower of the east,
according to its western conquerors, Zakynthos is
an island with many contrasts. It features cosmopolitan
beaches and well-preserved traditional mountain
villages. It has high-scale restaurants with international
cuisine and countless small family taverns. It's
full of bars with modern music and romantic 'cantades'(ballads)
- Zakynthos charms the visitor.
The breathtaking view from Bohalis hill is
unforgettable.
Visit the building that houses the public library,
the cultural center and the "Foskolos" cinema in its neoclassical style, the Byzantine
Museum, Agios Markos Plateia, the Temple of Agios
Dionysios - patron saint of the island, Strani Hill,
the Naval Museum, Ai Giorgi ton Filikon, the Moni
Agios Nikolaos tou Molou where the island's patron
saint Dionysios spent the last years of his life
as an abbot.
Alykana and Alykes are presumed sites
for ancient Arkadia based on the Mycenaean pottery
vessels that were found in the area. They are both
seaside resorts on the northeast side of the island
with high tourist traffic.
You should visit the Moni Panagias Anafonitrias
(Plemonaria) in the village of Anafonitria located in northern Zakynthos. The entrance to
the monastery features a 15th century tower.
Argasi is a seaside village with a lot
of tourism and intense night life. The nearby
village Vasilikos is the center for the
many impressive beaches along the small peninsula.
The last beach, at Cape Gerakas is one
of the beaches where the Caretta caretta sea turtle lays its eggs. Katastari is the head
village with ample water and Limni Keriou is the
port of Keriou with many seaside fish taverns
and a quiet beach. In Keriou Bay there are the
two giant rock formations, Small and Big Mizithra.
Maybe, most of the people do not know the results of the University of Patras. According to them, given the wide variety of flowers (approximately of 2,500 species) and the sunny weather, the honey of Zakinthos is the most nutritious in the world with healing properties for the prostate cancer, breast cancer and diabetes. Also, this honey contributes to the proper brain development of children.

Laganas is the most famous tourist resort on Zakynthos, located 11km from the capital. The beach is the favorite nesting ground for the Caretta caretta. Machairado and the traditional village Agios Leontas with ts beautiful church Agias Mavras are the oldest villages on the island while Orthonies,a small mountain village that features stone houseswith lively red colours from stone and tile, is amphitheatrically built on the side of Brachiona.
Planos is a centrally located village near the capital.
It's a known tourist area for family vacations.
The small "Floating Islands", Strofades, are 37 km south of Zakynthos
composed of two tiny islands, Arpina and Stambranio. They don't rise out of
the water more than 10 metres! Strofades are islands that seem to float on
the surface of the sea. |
