The travellers Stravon and Pafsanias are mentioned to Antikyra. Indeed, Pafsanias likens Antikyra with the city Kyparisso that is mentioned by Homer in Iliad.
In antiquity, Antikyra was a town of Fokis. Built in the Corinthian Gulf, on the west coast of the bay of Antikyra, it flourished in ancient times. The identification of the current village of White Houses and of Antikyra with the ancient Antikyra is dated back in 1806, when an inscription was found on the beach ...

According to the tradition, its founder was the mythical hero Antikyreas who healed Hercules from the fury he had been occupied with the plant "ellevoro", a medicinal herb that grows on the mountains of Antikyra. From that hero it got its name. It was a city with a turbulent historical evolution and the phase of its prosperity relates mainly to the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman period.
The bight of Antikyra has at its entrance two peninsulas, the Munda in the east and the Kefali in the west. Between them is the entrance to the bay where was the ancient settlement. Kefali is basically a rocky hill that rises to 346 meters. On the side of the hill that overlooksAntikira, was identified and investigated a carving of a width of 8.5 m with niches for offerings. The carving was identified with the sacred precinct of Artemis, who was honoured by the women of the region. An inscription that was found: "ARTEMIDA ANETHIKE", testifies to the worship of the goddess.
Antikira has been habitable since antiquity and prehistoric times to the early Christian centuries.
Feature is the fact that those investigated sites, revealed remains of at least three time-periods. Most of them are the important monuments that have been discovered so far and belong to the early Christian period.
Today, Antikira is a modern town with facilities for hospitality and entertainment on the land and at the sea, with neat and picturesque quest-houses for your stay, with beautiful beaches, with a cultural development and scheduled transportation.
It is a highly scenic area you can visit at any time of the year you choose. |
