IRAKLIA
It belongs to the Small East Cyclades and the distance from Naxos is approximately 1 hour.
There are two settlements on the island, the port of Saint George and the capital of the island, Panagia.
Transportation is served daily in the summer months from Naxos and four times a week from Piraeus.
When you are in Iraklia visit:
the cave of St. John, the largest of the Cyclades, with rich stalactite decoration, the castle Livadi where there are ruins of the Hellenistic period and ruins of the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of the Goddess of Fortune.
Also visit the Merichas bay, which is surrounded by high cliffs and the Papas mountain, from where you will admire the views of the surrounding islands of Iraklia.
You will swim at the sandy beaches of Livadi, Agios Georgios, Vorini Spilia and Alimia.
For those who love the pebble beaches, the suitable places are in Karvounolakkos and Amoudi of Merichas.
You can even swim at beaches where you can reach only by boat since there is no access by land.
Try the delicious local products: honey of excellent quality, various cheeses from goat milk, the most popular cheese is Xynomyzithra, the split peas and of course the fresh fish.
Spend a little of your time to stroll the island on foot.
You will be rewarded by the wonderful views offered by different parts of the route.
Observe rare birds in various places of the island where they build their nests and take a boat ride at very modest prices |
