Tourist Guide of Agathonisi

Agathonisi is a Greek Aegean island, located south of Samos. It belongs to the Prefecture of Dodecanese islands, with an extent of 13.6 square km and its coastline length reaches the 30.8 km and has a safety bay against to north winds.

Agathonisi is the northernmost island of the Dodecanese islands's complex. Its name comes from Agathochorto, a herb that grows plenty on the island. It is an island with natural beauties and three small picturesque villages, where you can experience first hand the authentic island's life. The people are very friendly and cordial that they will remind you what Greek hospitality is about.

The island has been inhabited since ancient times. The main attraction that you can see is the Tholi (the Domes). These are Byzantine buildings that served as food storage areas. The small bays, the leeward coves and the golden beaches make up the puzzle of the island's beautiful beaches with the crystal waters.

There are two settlements: the Big and the Small Agathonisi with 158 inhabitants (2001's inventory) which are the same name community that is governed by the province of Kalymnos. The island has transport links to the barren Dodecanese islands line or local service from Kalymnos and Leros, as well as from Pythagorion of Samos.

Agathonisi also includes the small islands Psathonisi, Strogili, Glaros, Kouneli and Mera. Its tourist development is very slow, more because of the difficulty and of the high cost of transportation of the construction materials. Just in 1980 the island acquired an electric generator.

There are regular visits of sailing boats and yachts. In winter there are many visits of police boats. The fishery is important to the island.
